Data sources
All figures come from official or openly licensed sources.
| What | Source | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Tides and water level | Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) | Official astronomical tides, water level model and measurements |
| Weather warnings | German Weather Service (DWD) | Official warnings for coastal, island and sea areas |
| Weather and water temperature | Open-Meteo (DWD models) | Hourly forecast of wind, rain and water temperature |
| Mudflat layer on the map | Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) | Topography of the mudflats, as of 2021 |
| Map | OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap | Base map |
How the times are worked out
- The site covers 55 places, 39 of them with their own BSH gauge.
- 16 beaches and islands use the nearest gauge within 20 km; each page names it and the distance. Places without a gauge in that radius are left out.
- High and low tides are the official astronomical times of the BSH. The “with weather” view uses the BSH water level model, which includes the wind.
- The data is updated at most every 30 minutes. All times are German local time.
What the site cannot tell you
- Whether it is safe to swim or to walk the mudflats. Swim times are a rule of thumb; the lifeguards decide.
- When to start a mudflat walk. That depends on weather, fog and creeks, which is why we point to certified guides.
- How deep the water is on your beach. The site shows the tide at the gauge, not a waterline.
The guides
The guides are based on primary sources such as the BSH, the German Weather Service, the Wadden Sea National Park and the DLRG. Every source is linked at the end of each article, along with the date of the last update. All guides
